EMG/NCV (Electromyography / Nerve Conduction Velocity)

What to expect:

The test takes approximately forty-five (45) minutes (set up, running the procedure, commencement of procedure).  The EMG/NCV measures electrical activity of muscles and nerves. You will have electrodes/small needles inserted into your skin that will measure the muscle and/or nerve’s response to stimulation. It is not unlikely for the EMG/NCV to cause some minor discomfort.  You may be asked to undress and wear a gown for this procedure depending on the body part that we are testing.

Patient Preparation:

  1. Please make sure that you arrive at our Reston office location on time for your appointment. Exams are scheduled in a timely manner. If you are late, you will be asked to reschedule.

  2. On the day of your procedure, please wear loose fitting clothes and undergarments. Sleeves and pant legs must be easy to push up well past elbows or knees.

  3. On the day of your procedure, please shower or bathe using low residue, non-moisturizing soap, and do not apply any body lotion or cream 24 hours prior to your exam. This is necessary to reduce skin bacteria and keep skin dry, as electrodes will not stick well to moisturized skin

  4. Please do not take any Aspirin or NSAIDS for 48 hours prior to your procedure. In the case of Warfarin, Plavix, Eliqius or other similar anticoagulants, please confer with the prescribing physician for instructions at least a week in advance of the procedure.

  5. Please contact your insurance company to receive an estimate on what cost(s) you will be responsible for. We do not check cost estimates. The CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) code for the test is 95907 - 95913, 95885 - 95887.

If you have any questions regarding this examination, please call us at (703) 478-0440. As stated in our payment policy, there is a late cancellation/no show fee of $250.00 that will be applied to the patient’s account if we are not notified of your cancellation 24 hours in advance.
