Ambulatory EEG
What to expect:
The test takes approximately one (1) hour (set up, running the exam, commencement of exam). The Ambulatory EEG measures electrical signals and brainwave patterns that are emitted from your brain over a forty-eight (48) hour period. You will have approximately twenty (20) electrodes glued to your scalp. The same is done for the Sleep-Deprived EEG, which you may have done already. You may want to bring a hat, scarf, or some other head covering, as you will be departing the office with the electrodes attached. After the examination, the glue may remain in your hair and be challenging to wash out. Please be advised that it may take multiple washes to completely remove the glue residue from your hair and scalp. You will also be wearing a recorder/monitor that weighs a pound or two (1-2 lbs). You will be wearing the electrodes and monitor for two (2) days. You will be asked to take the electrodes off yourself and bring the equipment back into the office or come back into the office to have them removed by the technician at the commencement of the two (2) day exam. This will be determined by the technician at the time of your exam. You may need to stay home from work or school during these two (2) days as some employers do not allow recording devices to be brought to work. If you are unsure, please check with your employer.

Patient Preparation:
-
Please make sure that you arrive at our Reston office location on time for your appointment. Exams are scheduled every hour, on the hour. If you are late, you will be asked to reschedule.
-
On the day of your test, make sure that your hair is clean (shampooed), free of hair products of any kind, and completely dry when you arrive. If your hair is damp and/or contains hair products such as hairspray, oils, mousse, or gel, the electrodes will not stick to your scalp properly.
-
Please do not shower or bathe. Sponge bathe only!
-
Please wear a button-up shirt. It is difficult to remove pullover shirts with the EEG wires in place.
-
Please contact your insurance company to receive an estimate on what cost(s) you will be responsible for. We do not check cost estimates. The CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) code for the test is 95953 x2.
